AT A GLANCE

  • 200,000 global news sources scanned to identify mentions of the selected organizations
  • 1.2 million articles analyzed where these organizations were mentioned in relation to impact-driven activities in Latin America (at 1 min per article, it would take one person the equivalent of 10 years of full-time work to go through all the articles)
  • 4,600 member activities captured in a period of 16 months from January 2023 to April 2024
  • All activities classified based on geographies, social causes, SDGs, beneficiaries, organization type, support categories, and support types
  • The dashboard below provides an overview of the study’s results and allows for drilling down into different categories to help understand the reach and depth of the members’ activities

Through this monitoring, Latimpacto members and the wider impact community will gain significant benefits:

  • A clear understanding of the current state and future trends of impact activities across Latin America to facilitate strategic decision-making
  • Aiding in finding potential collaboration opportunities to drive collective impact by surfacing other organizations with activities addressing similar challenges
  • Insightful gap analysis of impact efforts across various dimensions, guiding initiatives to address unmet needs effectively
  • Productivity improvement by reducing the time required for data collection and analysis, enabling organizations to focus on decision making and impactful activities

To our knowledge, this project stands as the most ambitious and innovative application of the latest AI tools for understanding the landscape of impact activities, laying the foundation for the adoption of pioneering methods in the impact ecosystem.

  • About this Dashboard section provides detailed information on how to read the data along with disclaimers
  • Filters on the side allow for drilling down into the data based on different categories.

SCOPE, SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY

The scope is defined in terms of the selected organizations, including but not limited to the 210+ members of Latimpacto, and their impact-focused activities in Latin America.

The pilot scope covers English, Spanish, and Portuguese news articles published globally within a period of 16 months, from January 2023 until the end of April 2024.

The approach involves scanning 200,000 news sources with a combination of AI-powered text analytics methods to filter out irrelevant news. Combining Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing tools, data redundancy was removed, and information was then clustered and classified.
