Social Investment in Action in Asia (SIAA)
Social Investment in Action in Asia (SIAA)

Social Investment in Action in Asia (SIAA)
The Challenge
In an effort to comprehensively understand and showcase the breadth and depth of social investments by its network members in Asia, the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) wanted to map out the diverse and impactful activities of their members for developing better products and offerings, as well as communicating best practices across the region. Given the extensive and diverse nature of the sources where the information can be found, traditional data collection and analysis methods were insufficient for capturing the comprehensive landscape of impact investments, and too time consuming to be feasible from the perspective of time and cost.
Our Solutions
Our approach involved scanning 200,000 global news sources to identify mentions of AVPN members, followed by the analysis of 1.8 million articles where these members were mentioned in relation to impact-driven activities. This was achieved through a combination of AI-powered text analytics, including Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, to ensure accurate classification and reduction of data redundancy. The analysis led to the identification of 8,800 member activities over 18 months, which were meticulously categorized based on various criteria such as geography, social causes, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Results
The results were displayed in an interactive dashboard, which offers a detailed overview of the social investment landscape in Asia, providing valuable insights into geographical distribution, member activities, and social causes. This tool not only facilitates strategic decision-making for AVPN and its members, but also promotes collaboration and gap analysis within the impact ecosystem. By leveraging cutting-edge AI tools, this project stands as a pioneering effort to understand and enhance social investment efforts across Asia, demonstrating the potential of technology to drive significant advancements in the field of impact investing.

Building an AI Ready Workforce in Asia Pacific

Building an AI Ready Workforce in Asia Pacific
The Challenge
With artificial intelligence (AI) poised to transform economies across the Asia Pacific region, there was an urgent need to understand how the workforce could adapt to this shift. Despite AI’s projected contribution of up to USD 3 trillion to regional GDP by 2030, many workers, especially those from underserved communities, lacked access to skilling programmes that would prepare them for this transformation. AVPN, in collaboration with Google.org and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), sought to identify which communities were most affected, what skill sets were most at risk, and how to design inclusive and effective AI skilling initiatives across eight key markets.
Our Solution
AVPN and Impact Intelligence conducted the largest AI powered workforce analysis in the region to date. Over 400,000 public data sources were scanned using AI powered text analytics, complemented by a survey of nearly 3,000 individuals across Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The research mapped 20,000 digital skilling programmes led by 6,000 organizations and identified 160 skills likely to be transformed by AI. Eight “essential skilling clusters” were defined, including women, persons with disabilities, and workers with low digital literacy, with each cluster analyzed through the lenses of transformation, adaptation, and access. The team also surfaced barriers such as digital illiteracy, trust in AI, and language access, providing actionable guidance for intervention design.
The Results
The findings are now guiding the AI Opportunity Fund: Asia Pacific, a three year, USD 27 million initiative aimed at delivering accessible AI skilling to 500,000 workers. The study’s insights informed a 10 dimensional policy framework and practical design principles for scalable AI skilling efforts. It highlighted actionable pathways for governments, nonprofits, and private sector actors to develop context sensitive training that closes access gaps and equips underserved communities for an AI driven future. As the region advances toward digital transformation, this case study stands as a cornerstone for ensuring a just and inclusive AI transition for all.

Inclusive Health, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate in Asia-Pacific and Latin America: Barriers and Entrepreneurial Solutions
The Challenge
Following our successful collaboration to understand the challenges to inclusive health in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Bayer Foundation and the Global Alliance sought to broaden the study to map the barriers to inclusive health, sustainable agriculture, and climate across Latin America and the Asia-Pacific. The study sought to identify challenges as well as entrepreneurial solutions across 65 countries in the two regions.
Our Solutions
We gathered 2.5 million news articles, academic papers, and social media posts in 10 languages from 65 countries across Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. The multi-language, multi-geography analysis of this data was possible by harnessing the power of our AI-driven text analytics toolbox, allowing machines to perform computations and run AI models around the clock for a span of 10 weeks in the cloud. This led to the identification of 21 primary barriers and 109 sub-barriers related to inclusive health, sustainable agriculture, and climate in Latin America and Asia-Pacific, along with entrepreneurial solutions to the barriers and sub-barriers. Furthermore, the barriers and sub-barriers were quantified in terms of volumes, trends, and gender-related dimensions. To ensure the accuracy of our findings, we conducted three workshops with experts from both regions.
The Results
A selection of results was published in the World Economic Forum’s Strategic Intelligence platform. For more granularity, we developed an interactive dashboard where you can view the results and drill down into areas of interest. The insights derived from our quantitative and qualitative analyses will be published by the Global Alliance in the coming months to inform investments and partnerships in the areas of inclusive health, sustainable agriculture, and climate.

Inclusive Health in Sub-Saharan Africa: Barriers and Entrepreneurial Solutions
The Challenge
The World Economic Forum’s Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship was looking to understand the role of social entrepreneurs in improving healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. To do this, they needed a comprehensive understanding of the barriers to inclusive health and potential solutions to address them.
Our Solution
Impact Intelligence provided AI-driven data and insights to support the Alliance’s Actionable Insights Report. We analyzed more than 1.5 million news articles, academic articles, and social media posts related to inclusive health in Sub-Saharan Africa, both in English and various local languages. We identified ten broad barriers to inclusive health and mapped them to related solutions created by social entrepreneurs. Additionally, we calculated the correlation of each barrier with gender inequality and conducted temporal and geographical analyses to understand the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on inclusive health and identify clusters of countries facing similar struggles.
The Results
The uncovered insights were used in the Alliance’s report on inclusive health in Sub-Saharan Africa. The report informs investments, partnerships, and actions to nourish the enabling environment for social entrepreneurs attempting to tackle barriers to inclusive health in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Investing in the Future through SDGs
The Challenge
The UNDP wanted to create a platform that helps guide private capital toward investment opportunities with a positive impact as well as return on investment. To do this, they created a framework that is being adopted globally through UNDP Country Offices. UNDP asked us to map Investment Opportunity Areas (IOAs) for different sectors in China, including healthcare, agriculture, and the care economy.
Our Solution
We worked with UNDP China to identify IOAs for different sectors in China. The first step was to identify Chinese provinces of interest for each subsector by mapping provinces in terms of policy support and development need. This was done by collecting and analyzing each province’s policy documents and statistical data. After the priority provinces were selected for each subsector, relevant experts were identified and interviewed. Combined with data mining and desk research, a list of IOAs was generated, and supporting information was collected.
The Results
The study identified key Investment Opportunity Areas in healthcare, agriculture, and the care economy to inform impact investors through the UNDP SDG Investor Platform. The study provided clear investment opportunities that will have a financial return while also generating a positive impact for people and the planet.
